In the framework of the relationships between law and technological and scientific development, many lines of research are active within the Department of Law.

A research project was activated and financed with the funds of the Department of excellence, on the issues regarding Decision and new technologies (DANT). The research project investigates the impact of new technologies, and in general of the scientific progress, on legal decisions. The research analyses, from a historical and technical-legal perspective, some emerging issues deriving from the integration of algorithms and artificial intelligence in the decision-making processes. A particular attention is dedicated to the automated judicial decision and to the automated administrative decision, to the problem of the erosion of contractual autonomy, with particular regard to the e-commerce, to the theme of new emerging frontiers of civil liability, with special regards to driverless control systems. The research team is multidisciplinary and inter-sectorial, involving the jurists of the Department of Law, together with jurists of the University of Orléans and of the University of Passau and informatics engineers from the Marche Polytechnic University.

In the Department of Law, other lines of research were activated on relevant issues regarding the relationships between law and technological and scientific development, such as: new technologies and criminal and civil justice; new technologies and tax courts; the study of new markers of alcohol abuse in the piliferal matrix for the diagnosis of a clinical condition of abuse, the application of diagnostic imaging methods (CT and MRI) in the assessment of age in living subjects, the use of alternative matrices in the toxicological diagnosis; transportations and new technologies.

Moreover, a proposal for  Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) was activated, under the title Data and teChnoLOgy Shaping the European Landscape (DisCLOSE). The project promotes an interdisciplinary research program, involving academic and non-academic institutions, with the aim of shaping, understanding and improving the relationship between citizenship and digital technologies. The attention is on Blockchain Technology (BCT) as one of the most relevant forms of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). The research has the aim to investigate how the Blockchain technology can implement the values of citizenship and advance the inclusion of citizens in the urban areas. The consortium gathers expertise from different scientific backgrounds (legal, economic, engineering), from academic and non academic institutions, belonging to several countries, such as China, Israel, France, Albania, Spain, Italy.
